When we first touched down in Japan last July, we took the trains home to Rey’s Grandparents house in Chiba. Upon arrival, Rey’s Grandmother gave Rey a “Salty Litchi” drink, and I proceeded to make endless jokes about how lit his chi was. For whatever reason, I wasn’t really a fan of it at the time, in Japan.
Flash forward to two grocery runs ago, I’ve gone through 4 bottles myself since I discovered it at Nijiya, my local Japanese market. It’s very good chilled, but I also love it when it warms to room temperature because the salty aspect of the drink comes out more. Priced at $2.19 in America this delicious drink would probably be 130¥ in one of the vending machines around the cities in Japan. There’s no American drink equivalent, so you’ll just have to try it to tell me if you think it tastes like something we already have.
Way back when Rey and I started living together, we discovered CC Lemon at Nijiya and Rey swore up and down it was delicious and I needed to try it. He lived in Japan for a number of years besides being born there so I kinda have removed take his word for it. From that moment I’ve been hooked and we get their big bottle (pictured) for 4.99 I think, the little bottles are $2.49 and would be about 130¥ in a Japan as well. This drink is definitely better cold like any bubbly drink, and actually provides you with a handful of healthy vitamins in the drinks mix. I like to liken it to VitaminWater here in the states.
If you have the opportunity to pick one of these up in store, please do yourself a favor. These are the best, and they’re actual popular drinks in Japan which is really cool too.
