We are so far into the year by the time you’re reading this that I may have to update this again, but I wanted something from our favorite danger noodle on the blog for 2021. I really have made an effort this year to schedule my posts in advance so I can stay on top of my consistency, while also allowing for days off and overly productive days without overloading you all in one day. With that in mind, this is an early 2021 update on our legless friend and the thing that inspired this post in the first place.
I was scrolling through my daily Instagram stories when a friend of mine posted her boots tread marks in the snow in Massachusetts. I immediately knew who made the boots, and headed off to Google to find out how I could get a pair. Mind you there are two boots that look identical on the outside when you search for them, there’s only one with this tread mark.(Pro tip if you’re searching too). Gucci made an embellished ankle boot that makes my heart go pitter-patter, and leaves behind an epic footprint. It’s priced similarly to my current rent, so there is no chance I will be strutting in these boots, but I have to have them one day.

That being said, the snake I do have access to is just as lovely and man does he make me happy. Roman has not been weighed in the new year because I was waiting for his first feeding to have a starting point. He just ate on 1/29/2021 and it was a rat pup. I waited a bit too long in between feedings I will be honest, he’s usually on a pretty good schedule, and we finally had a first.
I took him out to do a normal check, and hang out session and he did great after not being handled in a while. I went to go check his water while holding him and pulled it out, in the process of doing a bunch of stuff, like taking the tank lid off, placing it on the couch, retrieving the water dish and turning to go fill it I must have wiggled my pinky finger….and he just went for it. He struck out and fully latched on to my pinky finger and death rolled my hand for good measure. I was super calm about it because it was really just a pinch, but the strike itself was pretty shocking. I let Rey know immediately and asked him to make sure I had back up ways to unlatch him should my first go to’s not work since I was not going to be using Google with a snake biting me. I blew on his nose really hard a few times hoping the air pressure would be uncomfortable enough to get him to consider opening up his mouth, it did not work. I then had to wait for my sink to heat up the water in the bathroom and stood there watching my snake enjoy the feeling on my pinky knuckle in his mouth and blood running down my hand. The water took what seemed like years to finally heat up and I was able to “wash” him off by running his mouth under the water.
The bite was mostly shocking with a pinch of pain as the teeth broke skin, but him unlatching was the worst part hands down. I could feel the hooked teeth curving out of my skin and ripping out as fast as possible so he could avoid the water, and I was so nervous he would try again. Fortunately, I was able to tidy him up, put him away and clean myself up before my anxiety rolled in and I crashed from my adrenaline rush. Definitely not an experience I’d like to go through again so that’s why I want to make sure this year I keep track of Roman’s eating and weight.
If you would like more updates, photos or snake posts let me know, I am happy to put more together.
