I was the luckiest girl ever this last trip to Los Angeles, and yes I know it. I know I had to get through the stress of B meeting my parents for the first time during dinner at Vito’s, but everything else hit the nail on the head despite all the extreme traffic.
I wanted to be sure to show B all the things I considered part of “home” in our short stay down south, that was my main goal. We obviously enjoyed Vito’s as mentioned, we thought about Pinks Hotdogs since I had never been despite living with it in my backyard, but ultimately decided to skip it. We went to Universal Studios, the Santa Monica Pier and more…but nothing says home to an Angelino quite like tacos.

I had B drive us down into Culver City in our silver turbo Mustang, we picked out the best spot in the nearly empty parking lot, and settled in. As an LA native, this was very surprising to me. The wait used to be borderline undoable.
We went up to the window after an LA Coroner and his buddy picked out their meal for the night. We grabbed two Tito’s Tacos with cheese, a beef & bean burrito and a bean & cheese burrito and called it a day. They give you a lot of tortilla chips and salsa for free with your order, but this was more than enough food as is.
We sat in the car, ate our food and chatted the night away. I’m happy I got to remember how delicious Tito’s was and B got to try a new taco place. He definitely thinks tacos are a food group on their own so getting his approval was a special achievement.
For those who were wondering, Tito’s Tacos opened up in 1959 in the very spot they exist today on Washington Pl. They have been known for their hard shell tacos and having a small stand like atmosphere. These days they charge a bit less than $5 for a Tito’s taco with cheese in case you’re wanting some of your own. As of 2016 they started accepting credit cards for payment breaking away from their roots of a money/ cash only POS system. This made the kids at Brentwood go to them for fundraisers and quad activities. They were no longer capped by needing cash to pay for an absurd amount of catered tacos.
If you find yourself looking for a great historical food spot in LA, go to Tito’s you wont miss out or wish you went to Taco Bell. I promise.
