Now that I have gotten pretty serious about buying or long term leasing my own horse, I have compiled some of the necessities I need. Today’s post is all things first aid for horses. I keep a steady record of my equine inventory, so it’s important for me to have this list ready.
- Gauze $6/200
- OXO Container of Chlorhexidine $45/gal
- OXO Container of Betadine $58/gal
- Tricare Wound Cream $10/4oz
- Corona Ointment $40/36oz
- SWAT $12/7oz
- Vet Wrap $18/24 rolls
- Gloves → tack trunk in AZ
- Ice Boots → tack trunk in CA
- Hoof Pick → grooming tote
- Thrush Treatment → grooming tote
- Eye Wash Bottle/Syringe $7
- Bandage Scissors $7
- Tweezers $3
- Thermometer $2
- Electrolytes $18/5lbs
- Duct Tape & Diapers $15
- Epsom Salt $4/4lbs
- Silver Honey $23/20oz
- Sunscreen $32/1lb
- Wound Sponge $34/30
This list in it’s entirety without the items I have marked will cost you about $335. The Equifit Ice Boots will cost you, $25 a pair, and I was fortunate enough to get them in a Cavali Club box. They are hopefully my go to for leg care for my own horse, but I can’t swear by them yet since I haven’t broken the seal on them yet. Unfortunately, I don’t have a link to specific diapers or duct tape, you can find those at your local Walmart, or Target. However, I will recommend you buy newborn size diapers, and make sure you have the bandage scissors nearby. That whole set up for abscesses will cost you $20 give or take.
I hope this helps you put together your own version of an equine first aid kit, and gives you realistic numbers for owning your own kit.
