I am by no means an expert jumper, a preppy hunter, or equitation connoisseur, but I do love watching all of the above. When the time comes and I have a barn of my own, I think this knowledge will come in handy as I go to build fences for myself, students and boarders to use. I have eye for things that fit into a certain “aesthetic” and building a course shouldn’t be any different in my mind. However, I tend to be all over the place style wise so I imagine each fence at “Metropolitan Stables” would each be unique.
As a reminder “Metropolitan Stables” is a hypothetical barn management scenario, it’s a goal of mine to bring it to life one day, but these posts serve as a reference and as a building block for opportunities later in life. Dreaming up a barn is one of my favorite ways to waste time, so I thought I would share it with you guys.

I spent some time looking through Pinterest photos of birch fences for hunters or even show jumping competitions. I think bitch trees are beautiful and are great pieces for using full branches and bark for styling. I have a bitch cat tree idea for Turbo I can’t wait to break down for you guy one day too. However, I think this fence would add some hunter jumper vibes to Metropolitan Stables.
I would build two 5 feet tall standards probably about a foot wide so I could lace greenery into the birch standard aspects, and I would make/ cut 4 poles. I will always do a set of 4 poles for flat grid work, jump building and replacements if needed for well loved poles.
In a perfect world I would love to use actual straight branches for poles, but I’m not sure off hand how heavy each branch might be for horse safety and if they would be standard in diameter to be regulation size. I could also be persuaded to do a jump painting day and paint poles to look like bitch branches.
That being said they look absolutely lovely and I would love to have a birch fence. I would affectionately call it the “Birch Please” fence.
