Renegade Hoof Boots || 2023

Since at least 2012, Lander Industries Inc has been the manufacturer of Renegade Hoof Boots. While I am unsure of their launch date, I can say these boots are a must have in your tack trunk if you own or ride a barefoot horse.

Since truly taking on Cayenne as my main ride, I have dealt with the off days due to soreness, bruises and body discomfort. At 16 that is to be expected for the Pepper Boy, but I know I can help prevent some of that. I have been turning to Renegade Hoof Boots for our rocky rides, or post farrier appointments. While it took some getting used to, I am a hoof boot lover now.

These boots have been over 100 miles with me, I ripped a shirt mid trail to reclaim a lost boot, and they have been a lifesaver for the rockier parts of Arizona. While I am used to the Black Knight colored ones Cayenne rocks on his fronts, my Aunt Lori just got some bright Sport Orange ones for Soldier. They went on a small sale for Valentine’s Day and she grabbed them. They remind me of my high school short sleeve goalkeeping jersey in “Warning” orange.

While scrolling through Facebook last night I saw that she had tagged me in a local yard tack sale in my area, and I scanned through some photos. I immediately fixated on the two sets of Renegade Hoof Boots, and I knew I was going to be up early to be the first person at that sale for those things.

I have to preface this by saying a new boot, singular, cost $115-122 excluding shipping. At $300+ a pair shipped I always look for replacements, because they’re so expensive upfront. Cayenne has amazing feet, but like most horses his fronts are size 2 and his hinds are size 1, which makes it a bit harder to find all the right fits.

When I saw them in the photos in the Arizona group I prepared myself to be up early for them to be size 0 and for me to be sad, but I was still committed. They did have a handful of free items as well, and I really thought about hoarding more of that, but I decided against it in the moment. They had rope halters, bridles, reins and more just sitting there for the taking. I did grab a dirty breastcollar that still had a lot of life in it, it was bejeweled so how could I say no to free.

After I helped them set up since I got there so early, I grabbed the boots to see about their condition. There was a pair of size 0 boots and a pair of size 1’s. I noticed right off the bat that they needed to be restrung, but I knew that wasn’t going to be a deal breaker since the cables are interchangeable. The previous owner mentioned that she used some industrial rubber/plastic/silicone stuff to reinforce one buckle area, but they were in perfect condition otherwise. She assumed they had about 20 miles in them maximum, but she was too impatient to restring them herself so she just put them in the bin for sale.

I walked away with a basically brand new breastcollar and a set of hind hoof boots for Cayenne for $25. I am so happy.

They took 5 hours to restring so I totally understand not wanting to ever do that again, but I adore these boots. I grabbed the Arizona Copper shade, and they look incredible on Cayenne. After cleaning them up, taking all the foxtails and sand out, B made sure they were secure before taking them to the barn.

I cleaned out the Pepper Boy’s feet, and carefully fit him into his version of Cinderella’s glass slippers. He looked so sporty and stylish in them, I had to bring him out to the parking lot to grab photos of him in them. I highly recommend these boots.

They are great for proper frog action, they’re great for climbing and river crossings. While they are not swim friendly or sand friendly, they’re great for runs to local lunch spots on asphalt, or the usual Arizona shale trails. These boots never rub, or chafe, they work with the hoof and lend support as needed without being in the way. Some horses are not used to wearing boots and I feel like some hoof boots don’t allow for normal hoof use.

In a perfect world I would love to pick up a pair of Metallic Jade ones for Cayenne because the green would look stunning against his red hair. That being said if anyone has any Arizona Copper size 2’s they’d like to give up and sell, let me know your girl here needs a full set of matching boots now.
